Jiří Matějů

Jiří Matějů (*June 17, 1960, Šternberk) is a prominent Czech painter and author of sculptural objects, who is one of the most prominent representatives of geometric abstraction in contemporary Czech art. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1988-1994) in the studio of Bedřich Dlouhý, he established himself with his unique approach to visual language, for which he received a scholarship from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2004).

His work is characterized by precise geometric compositions, which he calls "optical metaphors". He works with colors and lines with mathematical precision, creating works with the illusion of movement and space. His ascetic approach to painting brings pure compositions without visible traces of human intervention, which seemingly transform before the eyes of the viewer. He draws inspiration from Buddhism, Christianity and theoretical physics.

Matějů has exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Prague City Gallery (2011/12), Queen Anne's Summer Palace (2018) and Bold Gallery (2023). His works are represented in important collections.
